One of the friendliest and most culturally appealing neighborhoods in San Francisco, Lower Pacific Heights is home to beautifully restored Victorian properties as well as some mid-rise condo developments. Located within the area is Japantown, the oldest and largest enclave of Japanese culture and history in the United States and host of the annual Cherry Blossom Festival, a neighborhood favorite. The heart of Japantown is the pagoda at the outdoor Peace Pavilion and the neighboring Japan Center Mall, a mecca for all things Japanese. Nearby, the Sundance Kabuki Cinema is the largest independent theater in the city and the site of several annual film festivals.
Lower Pacific Heights is also a destination for music lovers, with the Fillmore Jazz District home to venues such as the historic Fillmore Theater. For more active fun, Kimbell Playground and the Hamilton Recreation Center offer recreation for everyone in the family. For everyday needs, residents head to Fillmore and the surrounding commercial streets, or to nearby City Center mall and Laurel Village shopping center. For commuters, the Octavia corridor freeway entrance offers easy access to points south and east, while several bus lines make the daily commute a snap. ©2016 Maryann LoRusso
