At one time a purely agricultural area, Ingleside Heights is now a laid-back, middle-class neighborhood located in the portion of southwestern San Francisco known as the OMI (Oceanview-Merced Heights-Ingleside). Most of the homes here were built in the 1940s and 1950s as part of an urban plan. Many have front yards and moderately sized back yards, with those that are located on hills offering great views. The neighborhood is close to several outdoor attractions, including Sigmund Stern Recreation Grove, home to the Stern Grove summer concert festival, and Lake Merced, which offers fishing, boating, jogging, biking, and kite flying—not to mention golfing at one of its three world-renowned courses.
Residents benefit from Ingleside Heights’ proximity to several commercial areas, including the shops along Ocean Avenue and the department stores, retail chains, and eateries that comprise the Stonestown Galleria mall. In the neighborhood you’ll also find a scattering of friendly mom-and-pop businesses—from pizzerias to local grocers—that lend a homey feel to this ethnically diverse area. For those who commute, two major MUNI lines and proximity to Highway 1 and I-280 make getting to other parts of the city and Bay Area a breeze. ©2016 Maryann LoRusso
