With its ethnically diverse population, laid-back vibe, and easy access to several of the city’s most treasured outdoor spaces, the Central Richmond is the perfect neighborhood for nature-loving city dwellers. The area is sandwiched between prestigious Seacliff to the north and the outdoor oasis Golden Gate Park to the south, with trails and roads leading from 15th and 25th Avenues into the Presidio and Baker Beach. The Golden Gate National Recreation Area offers hiking trails, picnic grounds, playgrounds, a golf course, and several semi-private beaches with breathtaking views of the Golden Gate Bridge.
For culture and recreation, residents are lured to Golden Gate Park’s many museums, gardens and lakes, and to the Legion of Honor, an internationally acclaimed art museum housed near the ocean. Most of the homes here were built in the 1920s and feature beautiful architecture on generous lots. The Central Richmond’s main commercial drags are Geary Boulevard and Clement Street, which are bustling with friendly local bars, award-winning restaurants, and shops reflecting the neighborhood’s varied cultural influences. On these streets you’ll find a dining establishment to suit every palette—from Korean BBQ joints and French bistros to Russian bakeries and hipster coffee houses—and a store for your most obscure needs, from Chinese herbs and Israeli delicacies to Japanese action figures and Czech beer. After dark, the area lights up as hip whiskey bars, wine cafes, and coffee and karaoke bars attract a lively crowd. ©2016 Maryann LoRusso
